QUICK ANSWER

Neither size is universally correct. Check design current and corrected ampacity, then voltage drop, installation constraints and connector compatibility.

01Start with the circuit, not the panel wattage

A module power label does not describe the complete cable duty. Identify whether the route is a single string, a combined DC circuit or an AC inverter output. Combining circuits changes the current and may change the applicable cable construction.

Ask the designer for the circuit current, maximum system voltage, protection arrangement and route drawing. These inputs make two suppliers’ proposals comparable. A bare request for “6 mm solar cable” leaves important requirements undefined.

02Length and heat can change the answer

For an otherwise identical conductor and operating condition, a larger cross-section reduces resistance. That can help with voltage drop on a longer route, but it is not a substitute for calculating the actual circuit. Record whether the quoted length is one-way route length or total conductor length.

A rooftop bundle and a separated cable in free air do not share the same thermal conditions. Use the cable manufacturer’s rating with the relevant ambient-temperature and grouping corrections; do not copy a current value from an unrelated installation table.

03Confirm the whole connection

A connector has approved conductor ranges, cable outside-diameter ranges and prescribed assembly tooling. A larger cable that cannot be correctly terminated is not an upgrade. Submit the proposed cable datasheet and connector part numbers together for review.
