QUICK ANSWER

Armour is one part of the construction. Confirm that the complete cable and installation design are suitable for the intended buried route.

01Describe the actual environment

Provide soil conditions, possible flooding, ducts or direct burial, route crossings and exposure to chemicals. The supplier needs these details to identify an appropriate construction. A drawing that merely labels the route “underground” may hide several different duties.

02Separate protection functions

Mechanical armour, outer sheath and water-blocking provisions serve different purposes. Do not infer continuous immersion suitability from the presence of steel armour. Ask for explicit declared application limits and the relevant supporting specification.

03Review handling and interfaces

Confirm bending limits, pulling constraints and gland or termination compatibility from the exact cable and accessory documents. Earthing and bonding need project design review. Keep installation approvals separate from the commercial decision to purchase an armoured construction.
