QUICK ANSWER
XLPE and PVC are material descriptions. The full cable construction and its declared ratings determine whether it suits a project.
01Separate the layers
A cable may have XLPE insulation and a PVC sheath at the same time. Ask which layer each material describes. Compare the proposed conductor, insulation, screens, armour and sheath in a construction table instead of reducing the quotation to a single material acronym.
02Use the actual rating
Crosslinked insulation behaves differently from thermoplastic insulation, but the operating limits still come from the applicable cable specification. Check normal service, fault duty, ambient conditions and the equipment connection limits together. Do not transfer a temperature rating from a different product.
03Request fire claims independently
XLPE does not automatically mean low-smoke halogen-free or fire-resistant. Put required fire test references and construction details in the purchase specification, and verify that supplied documents cover the offered product.
Before you send an enquiry
- List insulation and sheath separately
- Compare the full construction
- Check declared service limits
- Specify required fire tests
