QUICK ANSWER
A change of conductor material requires a design review. Equal nominal cross-section does not mean equal electrical performance or interchangeable connections.
01Compare an equivalent duty
Ask for an alternative designed for the same load, route, voltage drop and fault conditions. The proposed cross-section may change. Evaluate cable diameter, weight and the space available in trays, ducts and equipment entries using the actual datasheets.
02Check equipment compatibility
Confirm that terminals, lugs and jointing systems are approved for the proposed conductor material and dimensions. An alloy designation alone does not settle connector compatibility. Obtain the accessory maker’s selection and installation documentation for review by qualified personnel.
03Compare total delivery cost
A useful commercial comparison includes compatible accessories, route changes, installation requirements, documentation and maintenance access. Record all deviations from the original specification. A lower cable price alone is not an adequate approval basis.
